Happy Friday!
This post has been marinating since the last time I talked about my favorite music moments from movies a year ago (read it here).
I listen to soundtrack music a lot during work and other activities, and I’ll favorite songs that bring back epic moments of watching a thing. Enjoy!
“Up is Down” from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Say what you will about the Pirates franchise, the music never disappoints. This scene is incomprehensible, but the music gets me every time. (It starts getting good at 1:20).
“Sixteen Hundred Men” from 1917
The entire film shot as a “oner” had such an epic climax. I’ll put this song on while running and find myself sprinting no matter how tired I am. The music is truly epic and I especially love that faint drum beat that starts around 4:40 just as he exits the trench. CHILLS.
Any Tom Cruise Running Scene in Mission: Impossible
Ya know, the music isn’t that great, but Tom Cruise could run to the tune of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and it would be thrilling.
“Running up that Hill” from Stranger Things S4
The highlight of the season that forced me to add this song to my running playlist. The visuals aren’t the best, but I’m a sucker for a flashback montage set to the perfect music, intercut with someone running for their life.
My Watch Has Ended from Game of Thrones S6
This scene and the cello that accompanies it has stuck with me for years. I still listen to this melancholy tune anytime I’m feeling…well, melancholy.
“The Tower” from Game of Thrones S6
Major spoilers! Don’t watch this clip if you haven’t seen this show!
Another cello masterpiece from Game of Thrones. This is the most impressive and powerful scene from the entire show and it’s the music that makes it special. The way it crescendos and cuts from one face to another. Is it on the nose? Yes. Does that make it any less perfect? No way.
“Battle of the Bastards” from Game of Thrones S6
Jon Snow is the MVP of this list. Here he is facing down Bolton’s cavalry solo. I know we like to poop on later seasons of Game of Thrones, but the music, especially in Season 6, is brilliant across the board.
“Nemo’s Egg” from Finding Nemo
Do you want to cry? Ok, here you go. Up and Wall-E deserve to be on this list as well. Thomas Newman put together a memorable piano motif that moves like water and the supporting instruments give it an underwater feel. It’s beautiful.
“Avengers Assemble” moment from Avengers: Endgame
Spoilers for the Infinity Saga, but the good guys win. This moment thrilled me in the theater and it still gives me chills today. Marvel has been on the decline lately but boy did they manufacture a major moment in this film.
Ok, I had to leave a bunch off so expect more of these fun listicles in the future. You can tell I’m a fan of music and running in movies. And cellos. Have a great day! :)

Ah, so much good music in movies and TV shows. Let me just mention a few diegetic songs. I wouldn’t say these are good for running, but they will put a smile on your face when you need that.
Here’s Oscar Isaac, Justin Timberlake and Adam Driver recording an early 60s novelty song in Inside Llewyn Davis. What always strikes me about this movie is how credible Isaac is as a singer. And how unforgettable Driver is in his only scene:

The song the cast play while the credits roll in Metal Lords is pretty great, with the sound of the cello. Technically, I don’t think that’s them actually playing, but it sure looks realistic:

Maybe one of my favorite music scenes in movies is in Blow-Up when the main character wanders into a London nightclub where the Yardbirds are playing an old blues song that they often performed:
