#119: Adaptations coming in 2023!
Killers of the Flower Moon, The Color Purple, Lessons in Chemistry, All The Light We Cannot See and more!
Happy June everyone!
If you, like me, love page to screen adaptations, you are in luck! This year is chock full of great stuff and there’s a lot of buzz. Let’s take a look at a few upcoming movies and shows based on books.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Based on the true crime novel by David Grann, this premiered at Cannes film festival a few weeks ago and generated a lot of buzz. It has a big-name director in Martin Scorcese and big-name stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone. The trailer is dark and gritty and I’m not sure how much darkness and grit I can handle for 3+ hours!
The buzz from Cannes has me excited, but even better is that the author is visiting my community in November as part of our One Book program. I’m excited to read the book this month, see the film in October, and hear from the author in November.
Lessons in Chemistry
Brie Larson is a favorite right now and I’d watch her read the dictionary. Big fan. She will be playing Elizabeth Zott in the TV series based on the popular debut novel by Bonnie Garmus.
I’m having a hard time with this book so far (about 30% in) but I have high hopes and expectations for it. The series comes out in October on Apple TV+.
All The Light We Cannot See
I did not think we’d be getting this series so soon! Wow, it looks epic. This is another book that I listened to back in 2021 — loved it — but would like to re-read. Series premieres in November on Netflix.
IMAX trailers
I watched Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 in IMAX and got to see a couple new trailers for Dune Part 2 and Oppenheimer. I normally avoid trailers but since these were on the big screen, I watched them.
Oppenheimer is based on American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin. I’ve read about 33% and I’m hoping to finish by the time the movie premieres on July 21st (I already have my IMAX ticket).
Dune is obviously based on the science fiction novel by Frank Herbert. I listened to the audiobook back in 2018 and it wasn’t an especially good audiobook experience, so I may read it again. Part 1 was a cinematic feast and part 2 looks to outdo it in every way.
The Little Mermaid
Halle Bailey is a star. I haven’t seen this yet (and will probably wait until it releases on Disney+), but I’ve been listening to the soundtrack and her voice gives me goosebumps.
I’ve never read the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale for comparison, but that’s on my to do list. I’ve heard it’s not kid friendly? Maybe has a freaky ending? We’ll see!
The Color Purple
This comes out at Christmas but a new trailer released recently. More Halle Bailey! Please, just put her in everything. This looks joyful and emotional and the trailer made me excited to revisit the book.
The stage musical had a run in Denver and I’m kicking myself for missing it.
American Born Chinese
This series released last week on Disney+ to mixed reviews. I read the acclaimed graphic novel recently and I liked it. I think it would have been more impactful and relatable had I read it when I was in high school. I thought the message was fantastic and I know it has impacted many Asian American teens in a positive way.
When I watched the trailer for the TV series, I could not tell it was the same story. The show looks like it has more action, more characters, and higher “world ending” stakes. I’m not planning to watch it but let me know if you do!
I know I’ve missed a lot! Let me know what you’re excited for.
Thanks for reading,
Kyle
I'm so excited for Killers of the Flower Moon and hope to catch up with the book sometime this summer. All the Light We Cannot See was a favorite of mine the year it came out, the trailer looks good but I'm a little hesitant because I don't love Shawn Levy as a director. This is out of his standard fare, so I am interested to see if it's better than his other movies.
Same Re: Lessons in Chemistry: About 30% in and it’s getting weird... not sure I’ll continue.
