I'm so excited for Killers of the Flower Moon and hope to catch up with the book sometime this summer. All the Light We Cannot See was a favorite of mine the year it came out, the trailer looks good but I'm a little hesitant because I don't love Shawn Levy as a director. This is out of his standard fare, so I am interested to see if it's better than his other movies.
Hey Rick, I finished over the weekend and really liked it. I think the early stuff gets paid off later in a satisfying way. There's one scene I think could have been left out but other than that I found the book delightful and I hope the show gets it right!
I watched American Born Chinese to see how it incorporated the Monkey King legend into what otherwise looked like a fairly routine high school superhero comedy. They packed a lot into the 8 short episodes. Good casting of Ben Wang as the main character Jin: he’s fun to watch and has the modern American high school kid’s body language and speech down pat. Unlike many teen TV shows, where parents are just ghostly figures who occasionally drift by, Jin’s mother and father have major roles and are aptly played by Yann Yann Yeo and the great Chin Han (what a catch).
We also see clips from a racist 90s sitcom that’s often playing on a TV in some scenes. I’m not sure this works very well, but it does function a little like a leitmotif.
An earlier New Zealand series called The New Legends of Monkey also deals with the Monkey King characters. It’s quite a lot of fun.
Uh, the original ending of The Little Mermaid is extremely freaky and not at all for kids. (I’ll tell you what happens, if you’re not going to read it. The whole thing is dark as all get out.)

That’s what I’ve heard but I need to see it for myself. Shouldn’t take me long to read. Is this why we aren’t doing this one for our collab? 😅
